Chinese Students in Korea Make Money from Korean Wave

Chinese students in Korea are less likely than their counterparts from other countries to work in low-grade jobs in convenience stores or waiting tables to pay their tuition. Instead they provide shopping services, work as tour guides or advertise Korean goods among Chinese buyers.

The easiest way for Chinese students to make money here is to shop for buyers back in China. They buy Korean cosmetics 60-70 percent cheaper in wholesale markets and send them to acquaintances in China.

Foreigners can register as business operators if they buy more than W500,000 (US$1=W1,112) worth of goods in their first transaction. Once registered, they can still buy smaller quantities at wholesale prices.

They can make profit margins of up to 60 percent if they buy goods here and sell them in China at list prices.

Bilingual speakers of Chinese and Korean can also make decent money as tour guides due to a surge in demand from growing numbers of Chinese tourists. "Chinese students are highly trusted by Chinese tourists," a tour operator said.

Some make money from online advertising for Korean culture and products as the Chinese market grows. Companies and regional governments are hiring Chinese students as their marketers to promote their products or local goods on Chinese social media like Weibo.

Robbins owns his own island. Why don’t you?

It’s just a “small island paradise,” mind you, but itdoesn’t hurt that Robbins has amassed a considerable chunk of change bybuilding a life-coaching empire. Of course, there’s a certain obnoxiousnessattendant in telling an audience that you’re rich, but the promise that theaudience can be rich too has its own charms. Robbins seldom ceases to berah-rah in his belief that if readers just suspend disbelief and follows “the 7Simple Steps in this book”?the proprietary caps are his?then the big win can’tbe far behind. Obnoxiousness aside, the author is no slouch; for this book,he’s interviewed and studied the portfolios of numerous billionaires (ordinarymillionaires need not apply) to find out the secrets of their success, many ofwhich fall into his own simple-step septet. It would steal Robbins’ thunder toreveal them, but one bit of general counsel that makes good sense is offered byJP Morgan Chase investment whiz Mary Callahan Erdoes: “You can never be out ofbalance in taking care of yourself as a person, taking care of your work as aprofessional, taking care of your family, taking care of your friends, yourmind, your body.” On the matter of balance, Robbins offers a seeminglycounterintuitive dis-recommendation of the old balanced-portfolio mantra,which, he holds, can put the holder at unnecessary risk; that provocativeadvice alone is worth the cover price. Of course, the rules vary frombillionaire to billionaire; they call to mind Somerset Maugham’s witticism,“There are only three rules for writing a novel. The trouble is, no one knowswhat they are.” Still, Robbins’ common-sensical, relentlessly positive, oftenhighly specific advice is both useful and inspirational?which is just asadvertised.
