KIRKUS REVIEW

In this slurp-worthy picture book,Mei loves to watch Grandpa Tu create noodles spun out of dough, magic andplenty of heart.

The emperor’s birthday approaches, and Mei’s village buzzes with preparations. Grandpa Tu, a master noodle maker, enchants Mei with show-stopping dexterity, as he slaps, kneads and stretchesplain dough into wondrous noodles. Mei asks if he can make jump ropes or kitestrings from noodles. He answers with poetic wit?“Simple as a sunflower seed”and “Easy as a sea breeze”?and works through the night with abandon. When it’stime for the emperor’s long-life noodles, a birthday tradition, to be made, thevillagers are surprised to learn Grandpa Tu isn’t making them. Instead, he saysit’s time for Mei to learn the art of magic noodle making herself. Thisintergenerational relationship endears from the start, and readers will want notonly a plate of noodles, but a grandpa like Tu. Thong plants a playful, repeated rhythm to describe his technique (“SLAP, knead and stretch”), whichgrows organically with Mei’s discovery of her own talents. So’s rich watercolorillustrations radiate affection between the two, especially when they stretchnoodles in a cats-cradle?like fashion or across the gutter in a vigorousculinary workout. And animal-shaped noodles, in the forms of cats, roosters anda dragon, add whimsy and elegance.

Playing with your food has never been quite soenticing. (Picture book. 4-8)

Instead of Pulling a Rabbit Out of a Hat, The Magic Act Eye and Cheek Palette by bareMinerals Creates Compliments Out of Thin Air

bareMinerals The Magic Act (2)

Huzzah! Good news, friend! As it turns out, you will not have to promise your first born child, sell your soul or slice your arm open and drip blood into a boiling cauldron in order to experience The Magic Act ($39), the new holiday neutral eye and cheek palette by bareMinerals.

Seriously, thank goodness, because the last thing I want to do on a Monday afternoon is barter with a warlock. Generally, I’m much better equipped for things related to the dark arts later in the week…like around Wednesday or Thursday, after I’ve warmed up. :)

bareMinerals The Magic Act (1)

The Magic Act comes with six powder eyeshadows (three mattes and three shimmers), three blushes (two satins and a shimmer) and a highlighter, all in neutral shades, and with pigment levels that range from sheer to medium.

It’s weird, but whenever I wear this palette, I usually wear it with a bright lip and sometimes a bold liner, and when I do, someone will invariably ask about my lids or cheeks…even though those are the parts of my look that aren’t bold or flashy.

The palette’s neutral browns, beiges, taupes, pinks and peaches are mysteriously attention-getting…

bareMinerals The Magic Act (3)

In pop star vernacular, The Magic Act is not Beyonce. It’s more like Kelly or Michelle, in that, yeah, you know they’re there, but it’s really all about Miss Thang in the front.

The Magic Act excels as a backdrop/backup singer for bright lips and bold liners, or as an everyday neutral palette with colors that look natural.

Highlighter in The Premiere; blushes in The Close Call, The Natural High and The Indecent Proposal

From the left: eyeshadows in Celebrate, Fortune, Shazam, A-Ha, Pumped and Foreshadow

You can find it now, for a limited time, at bareMinerals counters, Sephora and online for $39.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
