KIRKUS REVIEW

The world record?setting Whipplefamily faces off against the rival Goldwins in the World Record WorldChampionships.?

A string of bad luck has fallen uponthe Whipple family, and black sheep Arthur Whipple has taken it upon himself toinvestigate the series of unfortunate events that continuously derails hisfamily's quest for glory. The prime suspects are the Goldwins, an up-and-comingteam that has the World Record World Championship in their sights. The bizarremystery weaving throughout Ward's sequel includes vandalism, bribery, murderand kidnapping. Unfortunately, this promising concept is smothered bystylization and padding. There's simply no reason for this story to bestretched across 375 pages, other than to indulge the author's apparentfondness for over-the-top buffoonery and narrative dead ends. The final strawis reached during the book's last chapter, in which the mystery is resolved notby Arthur and his clever sleuthing but instead a letter left behind by theguilty party. This letter spans 10 pages. Readers deserve better than 10 solidpages of exposition at the end of the book explaining who did what to whom andwhy?and setting up the third Whipple adventure, one few readers will likely be interestedin.

An exciting premise destroyed bytedious plotting. (Fiction. 8-12)

Sun Yang to Be Probed by World Anti-Doping Body

In the ongoing controversy over Chinese swimmer Sun Yang, the World Anti-Doping Agency is stepping in to investigate the athlete.

The decision comes after it was belatedly revealed that Sun tested positive for a banned substance in July but only suspended for three months so he was able to take part in the Incheon Asian Games in September.

Under global regulations, all athletes caught with a banned substance need to be reported to WADA within 20 days. But China never reported the test results.

WADA pledged to further investigate the issue and may take it to the Court of Arbitration for Sports.

Tonight, I’m Livin’ in a Fantasy (My Own Little Nasty World), With the New MAC Nasty Gal Collection Lipsticks

MAC Nasty Gal Matte Lipsticks from the left: Runner, Stunner and Gunner MAC Nasty Gal Matte Lipsticks from the left: Runner, Stunner and Gunner ($16 US each, $19 CAD)

“Psst! Look at that girl.”

“Which girl…?”

“That one!”

“Which one? That one right there?”

“Yeah, that one you’re rudely pointing at in broad daylight right there, LOL! The one wearing the dark matte lipstick.”

“Yeah, I see her… She’s nasty.”

MAC Nasty Gal Matte Lipsticks from the left: Runner, Stunner and Gunner From the left: Runner, Stunner and Gunner

“What!? What are you talking about, ‘she’s nasty’? That’s a terrible thing to say!”

“No, doofus. Not like that. I mean she is literally a nasty gal.”

“You lost me…”

“I mean she’s wearing one of the three lipsticks in the new MAC Nasty Gal collection.”

Another fab collab, this one between MAC and Nasty Gal owner/founder Sophia Amoruso, the four-piece MAC Nasty Gal collection is coming to select MAC stores and the MAC website December 4 (through January 1, 2015) with three lipsticks in Stunner (a matte red), Runner (a matte burgundy) and Gunner (a deep matte purple) for $16 US/$19 CAD, as well as a true red Studio Nail Lacquer with a creme finish called Flaming Rose ($12 US/$14 CAD; not shown in this post).

“Oh…”

“Yeah, being a nasty gal is good now if you like your lipsticks dark, matte and severe.”

“OK.”

“I think it’s supposed to be (air quotes) ‘edgy,’ or something.”

MAC Nasty Gal Gunner Lipstick MAC Nasty Gal Matte Lipstick in Gunner

“Oh…then I want to be a nasty girl.”

“Um, hello, Vanity 6! It’s ‘nasty gal,’ not ‘nasty girl.’ Sometimes you’re so hella ’80s…”

“Haha, she’s got jokes. But no, really, do you think I could pull that off?”

“Yeah, I think you could if you had absolutely no traces of a bad dry lip sitch, because those lipsticks are dark, capital D-A-R-K, and they don’t leave any room for imperfections. They’re totally unforgiving, especially the burgundy shade (Runner) and the dark purple (Gunner). My flakes were front and center when I tried ‘em, but the red shade (Stunner) was better.”

MAC Nasty Gal Matte Lipstick in Runner Runner, and flakes like WHOA!

“Ooh! OK…I’m gonna get nasty with the red then.”

“Yeah, get nasty with the red.”

“Nasty!” :)

“Stop, ya perv.”

How Carrie Bradshaw Helped Rid The World Of Pubic Lice

Well, this is certainly interesting news: The British Association Of Dermatologists is thanking Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) for the near-extinction of pubic lice.

According to The World Daily, when Carrie Bradshaw got a Brazilian bikini wax on an episode of "Sex And The City," the rest of the world followed suit.

“What we have seen at work is the law of unintended consequences, in popularising hair removal Carrie Bradshaw and co. have contributed to ridding humanity of pest that had plagued humans for millions of years," Dr. Kun Sen Chen of B.A.D. said. "Sadly there isn’t an Emmy for that."

While "Sex And The City" had its fair share of "OMG" moments -- including Charlotte's (Kristin Davis) run-in with crabs in The Hamptons -- it also gave us many great mashup opportunites, like this very long list of guest stars:

And Vulture's unforgettable "segue" supercut.

Liz Smith: Producer Walter Wanger's Re-Issued Memoir on His 'Life With Cleopatra' Recalls an Epic Movie and a Scandal That Rocked the World

Get Entertainment Alerts: Sign Up

"Did you ever think of marrying a comedian?" asked Johnny Carson of Elizabeth Taylor back in 1992. "Most of them were comedians!" said La Liz without a moment of hesitation.

? I thought of this again when I found that the delectable Shelley Wanger of the publishing world had sent me a book that her famous father, Walter Wanger, wrote about the experiences he had in producing "Cleopatra." This is a project he oversaw for six years and two productions, one in England and one in Rome. It was a labor of love that was sabotaged at every pit-stop -- finances, Hollywood egotism, the star almost dying, the star embroiled in the greatest show biz scandal of all time.

To read this little soft cover book from Vintage of Random House again, about the run-up to one of the most famous and infamous films ever made, was to be absorbed and delighted all over again by Mr. Wanger's "diary," with the help of reporter Joe Hyams. One is struck by Wanger's calm collected intellectual vigor, his defense of Elizabeth the star, his defense of the talented Joe Mankiewicz as the final director, and his annoyance, irritation and disapproval of the then 20th Century Fox executive division. Particularly Spyrous Skouras, the head man at Fox who screamed at Wanger, while Elizabeth lay dying in London, "We would have been making money on this already if it wasn't for her! (Neatly forgetting that four million dollars had been spent on the film before Elizabeth set foot on the soundstage.)

Skouras had wanted either Joanne Woodward (can you imagine?) or Susan Hayward (the snarling Brooklyn spitfire.) Wanger's other villains were the world paparazzi, who bedeviled the production in Italy, especially after the romance between Elizabeth and Richard broke.

I finished this in just two days of absolutely ravishing reading. I had forgotten so much of this story, which has been told so often and seldom does anyone get anything right about the phenomenon that became "Cleopatra" the movie. By the way, it did not "bomb." It was the highest-grossing film of 1963. The public flocked to it. But it could never re-coup its astronomic final cost, in theaters. Years later, "Cleo" inched into the black after its sale to TV.

P.S. This serious, elegantly written book is not to be confused with "The Cleopatra Papers" by Jack Brodsky and Nathan Weiss who were the major on-set press reps. Their book of mutual almost daily correspondence is a riot, and far less dignified than Wanger's measured tone. ("Elizabeth went absolutely bonkers today. Burton took her to his dressing room and apparently told her it was all over between them. Imagine, a guy turning her down!") They could be read back-to-back if possible.

"Cleopatra" is now available in a pristine Blu-ray restoration.

? Lots of people braved the 90-degree-plus weather to cram into the Ziegfeld Theater in Manhattan the other night. They were there for the premiere of the new Channing Tatum/Jamie Foxx action flick, "White House Down," directed by Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day," "The Day After Tomorrow," etc.)

All the stars attended -- Channing, Jamie, Maggie Gyllenhaal, James Woods, Richard Jenkins. They all looked very lovely. Especially brand new daddy, Mr. Tatum, who knows how to fill out a designer suit.

I'd like say this Columbia Pictures effort is high on originality, but in fact, while watching it, I kept mixing it up with "Olympus Has Fallen," released earlier this year with a similar theme -- terrorists take over White House, disillusioned hero, child in jeopardy, lots of explosions, and the creepy/thrilling/awful experience of watching Washington D.C. under attack.

? Jamie Foxx plays the president of the U.S. but he doesn't have the comforting and commanding gravitas of, say, Morgan Freeman. Well, who does? Channing is the man who saves the day. He is a good actor, but when he doesn't seem motivated by the script, he can be rather pleghmatic and stolid. It doesn't seem he was terribly motivated here, as opposed to Gerard Butler in "Olympus," who jumped right into the barrel of cheese with gusto.

But what the hell. It's mindless, well-crafted summer entertainment and one should not expect more. Interestingly, the NYC audience was in a super-patriotic mood. Every sweeping shot of the capital, especially as the good guys were winning, brought vociferous cheers.

Best line and biggest laugh came from Foxx, who ordered his Secret Service to "get this trash off my lawn!" indicating the defeated terrorists.

Sponsored also by Bulova there was a party after at the The Frick Collection. It was still steaming hot, but most people -- including Ang Lee, Peter Sarsgaard,Gabourey Sidibe, Ingrid Sischy, and the new "It" boy, Patrick Schwarzenegger -- traveled up to 70th street for the festivities

? We want to include here a hail and farewell and good wishes for our longtime friend, the actress Holland Taylor who will conclude her incredible outing as the late great one time Governor of Texas, Ann Richards. The play, written by Holland, concludes its run at the Vivian Beaumont in Lincoln Center this coming Sunday.

This offering about the sometimes outrageous, but certainly liberal forward thinker Ann, who died of throat cancer in 2006, was a welcome addition to the Governor's lore. She made New York City her home for almost the entire last five years of her life, arriving here right after 9/11. Ann loved the City's drama and Broadway theater most of all.

Holland, seen here in a sketch by the great Landmark artist Al Hirschfeld, is ending her New York run in "Ann" as a Tony nominee and an ever beloved actor from TV's "Two and a Half Men" and other celebrated shows. We hope she will find herself living here in New York again very soon!

World Chefs: Pino Lavarra ups the ante in Hong Kong

By Cathy Yang

HONG KONG (Reuters) - At the top of Hong Kong's Ritz-Carlton, one of the highest hotels in the world, two-star Michelin chef Pino Lavarra busily toils inside the kitchen of Tosca, whipping up Italian dishes that marry tradition with innovation.

But the 44-year-old chef from Putignano, Italy, admits he has yet to create the perfect east-meets-west dish as he prepares to open the Ritz's fine-dining Italian restaurant this month.

Reuters spoke with Lavarra, former executive chef of Rossellini's restaurant in Ravello, Italy, and sous chef of Le Manoir Aux Quat'Saisons in Oxford, England, about dining in Hong Kong, how one year in Malaysia influenced him, and why his mother is "the most brilliant home cooking chef".

Q: What has changed in the city dining landscape since your first visit in 2002?

A: I was very impressed at my first visit to Hong Kong. I experienced a high standard of cuisine. Since then I've been here a few more times and I've seen there is an increasing level of professionalism, culinary knowledge on best products from around the globe. This city attracts more and more great chefs to come here and share their knowledge and experience. So the changes are evident and in a positive way.

Q: How is Hong Kong inspiring you with your new creations? You are known to present classical ingredients in contemporary and innovative ways.

A: Hong Kong is a dynamic city, a global metropolis at the crossroads of East and West, and at the same time rich in local flavor. My creation is inspired by everyday life, through research and preparation. It is not difficult to have new ideas.

Q: How would you define the "gastronomic memory" you wish to imprint on your diners' minds?

A: My creations look complex but they are of the most original taste that will take you back to some memorable moments of your past. I'm not a magician, I'm just a cook, but I have passion and love in my work. I try my best with my knowledge and experience to craft a gastronomic memory for my guests.

Q: You are introducing diners to southern Italian food they may have never seen before. What are some of these dishes?

A: All of my dishes are an experience. From the Buffalo mozzarella golden sphere, fennel seed bread crumble, crispy anchovies and Martini cocktail, roasted gnocchi, calamari and stew potato, to the baked Mediterranean blue lobster, basil bread crust, mashed peas and summer truffle ... The finale petit fours the guests will experience is the Cloud, made of cotton candy sugar filled with cookies and chocolates.

Q: You want to integrate Asian elements that marry well with classical Italian cuisine. Which dishes highlight this fusion of East and West?

A: I'm still working on the East meets West concept. The dish representing the best of this theory is the Sea Tiramisu -- Italian name and product, Japanese precision, light infusion of prawn oil with ginger and lemongrass.

Q. Your mother was your mentor. She was your school's cook. How has she influenced you through the years?

A: She shared with me all of her experience, her good sense of taste and her culinary knowledge. To me, my mum is the most brilliant home cooking chef. She has always been able to feed a family of eight with joy and passion for food.

Q: After working in various countries in Europe including Germany and Britain, your career took you to Asia in 1996. How did your brief stint in Malaysia influence your cooking since?

A: I spent one year working in Malaysia. During that time, I was able to gain more knowledge about Asian cultures that really attracted me and taught me how to make good use of different spices.

'Boy Meets World' Cast Reunited!

The "Boy Meets World" cast, together again!

Many of the actors from ABC's iconic '90s TV series gathered at the ATX Television Festival in Austin to chat about the epic romance between Cory and Topanga, Cory and Shawn's ultimate bromance and the "Girl Meets World" spinoff during a panel on Friday morning.

"Boy Meets World" cast members Ben Savage (Cory Matthews), Rider Strong (Shawn Hunter), Matthew Lawrence (Jack Hunter), Maitland Ward (Rachel McGuire), Betsy Randle (Amy Matthews), Lily Nicksay (young Morgan Matthews), Trina McGee (Angela Moore) and creator Michael Jacobs were all on hand to dish on what went into the beloved ABC series, which ran for seven seasons.

"We never talked down to you and you knew that right away," Jacobs said to the panel audience, full of "Boy Meets World" fans. "What separated 'Boy' was that we operated thematically. We talked about what's next for you. We talked about friendship and how important it was ... The three of those characters [Cory, Topanga and Shawn] were so compelling, and we spun out from there."

Danielle Fishel (Topanga Lawrence), Will Friedle (Eric Matthews), William Daniels (Mr. Feeny), Lindsay Ridgeway (older Morgan Matthews), Lee Norris (Stuart Minkus), Alan Matthews (William Russ), Anthony Tyler Quinn (Mr. Turner) were noticeably absent, but Fishel taped a message to fans.

"It's a show that means so very much to me," the actress said. "I give you permission to ask as many embarrassing questions as you want."

Fans relished in the discussion and a screening of the series finale of "Boy Meets World" with the cast.

"We did that last scene [saying goodbye to Mr. Feeny] in one take because we were all so wrecked," Strong said. "It was our last scene -- the last scene in front of a live audience. It was so close to home. There was no filter between Shawn and Rider at that point."

"It's still hard to watch that scene," Savage added. "It was almost like saying goodbye to our childhood."

On Thursday, the "Boy Meets World" cast reunited and walked the red carpet to kick off the second annual ATX Television Festival.

Although the young cast members of the "Boy Meets World" Disney spinoff pilot, "Girl Meets World," weren't in attendance, Jacobs, Savage and Fishel (via video) spoke about the new show.

"I watch television and I love television and we do what we love and I don't see anything on television right now that is speaking to the audience that we spoke to," Jacobs said. "If we can do it and honor this show and make it unique because it's a different world, that's the reason to do it.

Fishel said reuniting with Savage was "even better than I could've possibly imagined it could be." "After being apart for so many years, we were worried Cory and Topanga wouldn't come back to us," she explained. "There is something so special about the bond we share ... He really does feel like my husband. He will always be my first husband. Nothing can break that bond that we have."

"I think Danielle said it perfectly," Savage added. "We were both a little apprehensive and nervous, but these characters were written so well ... When you're watching 'Boy Meets World,' that's us. That's how we are."
